The late afternoon sun glinted off the carnival’s colourful tents, casting a golden glow over the bustling charity event. Laughter and cheers filled the air as families and friends gathered around the various stalls, all in the name of raising funds for the local children’s hospital. But the real attraction, the star of the show, was the dunk tank. A line of eager participants snaked around the area, each clutching their tickets and dreaming of the chance to send one of the town’s most stylish young women splashing into the water below.
Sandy's friends, Lena, Mia, and Jess, were already waiting by the tank, ready to do their bit for charity.

Lena went first, her athletic confidence on full display. She wore a snug pair of black leggings and a cropped tank top, practical, but still form-fitting enough to turn a few heads. As she climbed onto the perch, she flashed the crowd a playful grin. "Come on, then! Let’s see what you've got!"
The first few contestants missed, their balls veering wildly off course. Lena laughed, shaking her head. "Come on, I’ve seen toddlers with better aim!"
Finally, a lanky teenager with a determined scowl stepped up. He wound back his arm and let the ball fly. Thunk! The target lit up, and the seat dropped beneath Lena. She yelped as she plunged into the water, surfacing with a gasp and a splash of her hands. The crowd erupted in cheers.
Lena wrung out her ponytail, water dripping from her lashes as she grinned. "Alright, alright, not bad!" She climbed out, her leggings and top clinging nicely, but the opaque material revealed little of what lay underneath, other than the merest hint of the outline of her sleek sports bra. Sensing the crowd's disappointment, Lena laughed "Sorry lads, nothing to see here. Maybe next time!"
Mia was next, her laid-back charm drawing the crowd in. She’d opted for denim shorts and a cropped hoodie over a white tank top, the kind of outfit that screamed "effortlessly cool." As she took her seat, she leaned forward, resting her chin on her hand. "Alright, who wants to see me get soaked?"
A group of young men near the front jeered and catcalled, already placing bets on who would succeed. Mia winked at them. "Big talk for a bunch of blokes who can’t even throw straight."
One of them, a cocky guy with a backward cap, stepped up. He missed, twice. Mia dissolved into laughter, clapping slowly. "That was painful to watch."
Finally, a middle-aged woman with a sharp eye and a no-nonsense expression nailed the target. Mia shrieked as she dropped, the water swallowing her in one swift gulp. She came up sputtering, her hoodie soaked, the white tank top underneath clinging to her. The crowd whooped, but Mia just shook her head, water flying. "Cheers, Mum! thanks for helping out!"
She climbed out, her shorts darkened but still modest. "Sorry, boys," she called out, removing and wringing out her hoodie, her soaked tank-top a little tighter, but not enough to satisfy the more hopeful members of the crowd, "this isn't a wet t-shirt contest, you’ll have to use your imagination!"
Then came Jess. The crowd’s anticipation had been building all afternoon, and it reached a fever pitch as she stepped up. Jess had chosen a loose, floral sundress, light, breezy, but just sheer enough to obscure what might lie beneath. Speculation had been flying all day: Was she wearing a bikini? Lingerie? Nothing at all?
Jess played it up, twirling as she climbed onto the perch, the hem of her dress fluttering. "Alright, who’s ready to see what’s under the dress?" she teased, her voice dripping with mischief.
The crowd roared. Cameras flashed. A group of men near the front started chanting, "Dunk her! Dunk her!"
One by one, contestants stepped up, their throws growing more desperate with each miss. Jess laughed, fanning herself dramatically. "Getting warm out here, boys, I might just have to jump in, otherwise I'll never get wet."
Finally, a burly man with a beard and a determined glint in his eye hit the target dead-on. The seat vanished. Jess let out a dramatic scream as she fell, the water engulfing her in a splash that soaked the front row. She surfaced with a gasp, her sundress now plastered to her body, completely transparent revealing…
…a sleek, black one-piece swimsuit.
The crowd groaned in unison. Jess burst out laughing, shaking the water from her hair. "Did you really think I’d bare all for you?" She climbed out, peeling off the soaked sundress to expose the swimsuit in all its glory.
Sandy stood in front of her full-length mirror, the late afternoon sun spilling through the half-drawn curtains of her bedroom. She had spent the last hour meticulously preparing, not just her outfit, but her moment. The charity dunk tank was the talk of the carnival, and she intended to make sure no one forgot her turn.
She reached for the emerald-green evening gown draped over her bed, running her fingers along the delicate beading. The silk was cool and smooth, the color rich enough to make her dark hair and fair skin glow. She had chosen it for its drama, its elegance, and, most importantly, how it would cling to her when soaked. The thought sent a shiver of anticipation down her spine.
First, the lingerie. She slipped into a set of fine, ivory lace, barely there, designed more for teasing than for modesty. The bra cupped her perfectly, the panties hugging her hips with just the right amount of daring. She smirked at her reflection. This will give them something to talk about.
Next, the gown. She stepped into it, pulling it up over her curves, the silk whispering against her skin. The off-the-shoulder neckline framed her collarbones, and the beading caught the light with every movement. She zipped it up, adjusting the fabric so it draped just right, elegant, but with a hint of something more.
Finally, the shoes. Strappy gold heels, delicate but bold, clicking against the wooden floor as she turned to admire herself. She added diamond studs to her ears and a swipe of bold red lipstick, then fluffed her hair until it fell in loose waves around her shoulders.
Sandy checked her watch. The dunking would be in full flow, the perfect time to make her entrance. She wanted the crowd’s anticipation at its peak. She grabbed her clutch, a final touch, and filled it with a few random items she no longer needed.
The carnival was in full swing by the time Sandy arrived. The air smelled of popcorn and candy floss, the sound of laughter and music filling the space. She could hear the crowd before she saw them, their cheers and groans carrying over the noise as another contestant took their shot at the dunk tank.
She timed it perfectly.
Just as Jess climbed out of the tank, disappointing the crowd with her "big reveal", the boring one-piece swimsuit, Sandy stepped into view. The crowd's mood instantly changed, they fell silent for a heartbeat, then the excited murmurs began.
"Bloody hell!"
"Is that Sandy?"
"She’s not actually going in wearing that, is she?"
Jess turned, her mouth dropping open as she took in Sandy’s gown, her heels, the way she carried herself like she was stepping onto a red carpet rather than a carnival dunk tank. "Sandy, you madwoman," Jess breathed, shaking her head in disbelief. "You’re going to ruin that dress!"
Sandy smirked, sauntering toward the tank with deliberate grace. "Darling, some things are made to be ruined."
The crowd’s anticipation was electric as Sandy ascended the steps to the dunk tank, her emerald-green gown shimmering under the carnival lights. She could feel their eyes on her, hear the murmurs of disbelief and excitement rippling through the onlookers. The MC’s voice boomed over the speakers, announcing her with a flourish, but Sandy barely heard him. She was too focused on the moment, the build-up, the tension, the sheer thrill of what was to come.
Sandy reached the stool and paused, The crowd hushed, waiting. She could see the hunger in their eyes, the curiosity, the barely contained excitement. She smirked. Oh, she was going to make this worth their while.
With deliberate slowness, she turned and lowered herself onto the stool, her gown pooling around her like liquid silk, the fingers of one hand lightly teasing along the neckline while her other hand steadied the clutch nestling in her lap. The water in the tank below looked inviting, its surface still rippling from Jess’s recent dunk.
Sandy dipped her heels into the water, swirling them lazily, sending tiny waves lapping against the sides of the tank. The hem of her gown kissed the water, the silk eagerly soaking up the moisture, darkening where it met the surface.
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd as her skirt hit the water, getting wetter with every stir of her heels. Sandy tilted her head, her gaze sweeping over the crowd with a playful challenge. "Enjoying the preview, are we?" she purred, her voice dripping with mischief. She swirled her heels again, the water splashing just enough to send another wave of darkness up the fabric. The crowd groaned, some laughing, others leaning in for a better look.
Someone near the front shouted, "You tease!"
Sandy laughed, a rich, throaty sound that only seemed to egg them on. "If you want to see the rest you'll need to buy some tickets."
She leaned forward slightly, letting the neckline of her gown dip just enough to tease, her fingers still toying with the beading along the bodice. The crowd was practically vibrating with anticipation now, their cameras flashing, their voices a cacophony of excitement and speculation.
The MC, grinning like a man who’d just won the lottery, leaned into the microphone. "Alright, folks, you heard the lady! Who’s going to be the lucky one to send Sandy for a proper swim?"
Hands shot up. The line of contestants surged forward, eager for their chance. Sandy sat back, her smile turning wicked as she let her heels drag through the water one last time, the hem of her gown now thoroughly soaked and clinging to her calves.
She met the gaze of the first contestant, a young man with flushed cheeks and a determined glint in his eye. "Think you can handle it, love?"
He swallowed hard, gripping the ball like it was his last lifeline. "Reckon I can try."
Sandy’s laughter rang out, bright and daring. "Oh, I do hope you can."
And with that, she settled back on the stool, her gown glistening, her heart racing, ready for the inevitable splash, and the show that would follow.
The crowd pressed in, their faces alight with anticipation, cameras held high. She could feel the energy pulsing through the air, the buzz of excitement. The young man wound back his arm and hurled the ball. It veered wildly off course, splashing harmlessly into the water. Sandy laughed, a rich, throaty sound, and clapped slowly. "Oh, sweetheart, bless your heart. Try again?"
The next few contestants fared no better. One missed the target entirely, his ball bouncing off the backboard with a dull thud. Another came close, the ball grazing the edge of the target, but not enough to trigger the mechanism. Sandy’s excitement grew with each miss, her smile widening, her fingers still toying with the beading on her gown. She leaned forward, her voice dripping with playful challenge. "Come on, then! You can't all be useless, someone must be able to throw straight!"
The crowd laughed, but their anticipation was palpable. They wanted to see her dunked, to see the elegant gown totally soaked, wondering how it would cling, what it would reveal. Sandy could feel the heat rising in her cheeks, the thrill of the moment coursing through her veins. She swirled her heels in the water again, the fabric of her wet skirt darkening further, the silk now clinging like a second skin.
Then, he stepped up.
Tall, broad-shouldered, with a smirk that suggested he knew exactly what he was doing. The crowd hushed, sensing the shift in energy. Sandy met his gaze, her heart pounding. "Think you can handle it, love?"
He didn’t answer. Just wound up his arm and let the ball fly.
Thwack.
The target lit up.
The seat vanished beneath her.
For a breathless second, Sandy was weightless, then the water swallowed her whole.
The cold was a shock, but the sensation of the gown clinging to her body, the silk now translucent, sent a thrill through her.
Sandy laughed, throwing her head back as she wrung out a sopping curl. The water was cool, refreshing, the weight of the gown dragging her down just enough to make her movements slow, deliberate. She stayed in the tank for a moment, savouring the sensation, the way the fabric caressed her skin, the electrifying touch of her soaked lace underwear. She swirled her hands in the water, sending ripples across the surface, her smile wide and unapologetic.
Then, her hands flew to her lap, only to find it empty. Her clutch, the small gold one she’d tucked between her thighs as she sat on the stool, it was gone.
It must have slipped from her lap the second she hit the water. She took a deep breath and dove under, her hands groping blindly along the bottom of the tank. The water was murky, the metal sides slick under her fingers. Finally her fingers brushing against something, there! She snatched the clutch, triumphant, and surfaced with a splash, her hair plastered to her face, her gown plastered to her figure, the outline of her lingerie clearly visible. The crowd roared as she held the clutch aloft, water dripping from it, her laughter ringing out.
"Got it!" she declared, shaking the water from the little gold bag before tucking it securely under her arm, preparing to climb out.
She started up the ladder, but the soaked gown and her gold heels made the climb a challenge. The silk was heavy, dragging her down, and the heels slipped on the rungs.
She threw the clutch onto the ground and gripped the ladder tightly, her laughter ringing out as she tried to lift herself from the water, the weight of the soaked fabric making every movement a struggle. The crowd’s cheers and laughter filled the air, but her focus was on the slippery rungs beneath her fingers, and then, the pair of strong hands that suddenly appeared at her waist.
"Here, let me help you out."
She glanced up to see the man who’d landed the winning throw, Tom, grinning down at her, his eyes alight with amusement and something else, something warmer. Before she could protest, his hands were under her arms, lifting her effortlessly over the edge of the tank. Sandy landed on the grass with a soft thud, water dripping from her gown, her hair plastered to her face.
She didn’t hesitate.
In one fluid motion, she turned and wrapped her arms around him, pressing her soaked body against his. The cold water from her dress seeped into his shirt and jeans, darkening the fabric instantly. He let out a surprised laugh, but his arms came up to encircle her, pulling her close.
"See how you like it," she murmured, her voice teasing, her smile wicked.
Tom didn’t pull away. Instead, he hugged her tighter, his hands warm against the chill of her wet gown. "Oh, I like it just fine," he replied, his voice low, his breath brushing against her ear. The crowd around them whooped and catcalled, but Sandy barely noticed. She was too caught up in the moment, in the way Tom’s arms felt around her, in the thrill of the soaked fabric clinging to them both.
When she finally pulled back, her smile was bright, her eyes sparkling.
"You look fantastic" Tom grinned, his hands still resting on her waist. "Fancy another go?"
Sandy didn’t even pretend to consider it. "Oh, yes."
With that, she picked up her clutch, turned back toward the tank, her soaked gown trailing behind her, her heels clicking against the platform. The crowd erupted in cheers, but Sandy only had eyes for the stool, and the promise of another soaking, another moment of exhilaration.
And this time, she knew exactly who she wanted to dunk her…
Susan had had a great afternoon, relishing getting soaked multiple times, and meeting Tom was a bonus, but now it was time to go home.
The carnival lights faded into the distance as Sandy and Jess made their way back to Sandy’s flat, their heels clicking against the pavement. Sandy’s emerald-green gown was still damp in places, the silk clinging to her legs with every step, her hair slightly dishevelled from the repeated dunks. Jess, still in her modest swimsuit and a borrowed hoodie, her sundress stuffed in a carrier bag, couldn’t stop grinning.
"Sandy, you were incredible," Jess gushed, nudging her friend’s shoulder. "I can’t believe you actually went through with it, let yourself get dunked in that gown! The crowd went wild! I wish I’d been a bit more daring now. I should’ve worn something… I don’t know, fun like you did."
Sandy laughed, shaking her head. "Oh, come off it, Jess. You looked stunning, and you know it. Besides, someone had to keep the poor blokes on their toes with all that modesty." She winked, adjusting the strap of her clutch. "You should have worn some normal black underwear, it would have been no more revealing, and a lot more exciting."
Jess sighed dramatically. "I know, next year, I’m going all out. No swimsuit, no regrets. Just pure, unadulterated drama."
Sandy smirked. "Now that’s the spirit. Though you’ll struggle to top the sight of me scrambling for my clutch at the bottom of that tank. That was a moment, wasn’t it?"
Jess dissolved into laughter. "You looked like a glamorous mermaid! If mermaids wore designer gowns and panicked over lost handbags."
Sandy joined in, the sound of their laughter echoing through the quiet streets. "Well, if you’re going to dress up next year I might have some competition?"
Jess nodded, her eyes sparkling. "Bring it on!"
Sandy grinned, unlocking the door to her flat. "Can't wait. We’ll give them a show they’ll never forget."
